I want to buy a new house.  How do I know where to buy so that I don't have to worry about a flood ruining my house in  the future?   What if I decide to have a house built?

The insurance company you plan to use should be able to help with this.  Also real estate agents will probably have a flood map as well.

Where I live (Harris County, TX) the county maintains a website with very detailed elevation maps. I found it by on Google by searching the words "Harris county elevation maps". Perhaps the place you want to live has something like that.
