and sold at auction for property taxes.
the auction is december 5th i assume home owners who have back taxes unpaid have up until the morning of the 5th to pay their taxes otherwise their house will be auctioned off. but what happens next? who gives eviction notice? Is the sale final or does the home owner still have a shot at retaining their home?

that is determined by State Law which varies from State to State.

I recommend that you contact a Real Estate Attorney who is licensed to parctice in the State where the house is located.

Proerty tax or taxes of other nature ? These really should not be of your concern

The point is what are stated in the proclaimation of sales. If you do no comprehend what are stated therein, stay away.

Check with your local state government.  In Tennessee the property owner has a full year to pay the taxes even after the auction.
