My husband and I moved to a new town and began renting a townhouse in May and signed a 12 month lease.

We've been having problems recently with finances because I lost my job. The job market in this town is really terrible and I can't find work, so we can't afford to live here anymore.

My husband is also going away with the military in February, and I don't want to be alone in a new town.

So we figured we would move back to the city, where there is a better job market, cheaper housing, and it's where both of our parents live (so I won't be all alone)

What happens if we break our lease? I really don't know what to do at this point, since we can't afford to keep paying it, but we also can't afford to extra fees to break it.

What should we do?

If you break your lease, you are most likely going to be held to whatever the penalty is for breaking it, and if you don't pay that penalty, expect to be sued.  It isn't the landlords fault that you lost your job or that your hubby is being sent away.  I would give notice that you need to move, try to mitigate whatever damages or penalties you might incur, and hope for the best. Maybe if you put a good chunk of a deposit down or last months rent, the landlord would be willing to keep that in lieu of going after you for the penalty.  Talk with the landlord, you might get lucky.
