10 grand is a good start and will be enough to pay closing and a down payment on a $100,000 home. However, your credit history is the most important concern.

There is a new tax credit that will give you back 10% of your purchase price up to a maximum of $7500. It is really a tax-free loan that has to be repaid at tax time over a 15-yr. period of time--sooner if the house is sold.
You don't say what price home you are looking at. $10,000 will buy a modest home but your area is pretty expensive, most likely, so that probably isn't enough.
